Promotion salary negotiation within same company?

Any tips? If I am offered 60K, but I want 65, how do I approach it? I am getting a promotion to work with a different group, same company. Thanks.

Depends on how much increase that is. If it’s 15%, you’re unlikely to get more that the original offer, unless the offer is below the minimum scale. You can always ask, especially if there is additional hardship, or if you’re going from an overtime paying job to a non-overtime one.
Always go higher than they suggest–it is there job to low-ball.
Document (specifically with $ numbers) the responsibilities you’ve handled and suceeded at (especially if you’ve saved the company money, or did the work of two people)–treat it like you’re interviewing all over again
Companies generally HOWL if the increase is over a certain amount (yet they will pay it to new employees in many cases)–when they say it’s too much or they don’t have it, CONTINUE pressing. I personally like to say, “I’m sure you’ll find it somewhere.”
If they are persistent at $60K, negotiate a package worth $65K–i.e. more vacation, personal time, stock options, etc. Since companies get tax breaks for that stuff, many times they’ll gladly give that over salary.
And finally, if you really want that big raise, the best thing to do is retool that resume and shop around. Most big salary gains today are only realized by going elsewhere.
Good Luck!
